Finspan - Sharks and Reefs: Review

Finspan - Sharks and Reefs: Review

Introduction:

Finspan is the fish (sea life) equivalent of the famous Wingspan. For the original review click here. This review will focus on the first expansion for Finspan; Sharks and Reefs. In this expansion the cards have increased from 125 cards to 200. With a lot of these new cards focusing on a new reef addition.

Reef:

In the middle of each player's board. In the twilight section a new board overlay has been placed to include a reef overlay.

Each reef will have a different coloured coral assigned to each dive track. Each coral token will score the players an additional points at the end of the game as well as bonus points (which change per dive track), for completion of all six tokens in a dive track at the end of the game.

To gain a coral token players have to spend the listed cost on the board, when passing through this section when diving. To gain a completed coral section the player will have to pay this cost six times on six different dive actions. Several fish cards in the game will have numerous ways they will interact with this new board from:

- Required amount of coral tokens in that dive track to play the card.

- Ways to gain coral tokens.

- New actions are unlocked once a certain amount of coral tokens are gained.

Sharks:

All waters contain both the predators and the prey. On the side of the prey there are now fish cards that have no cost to be played or allow other cards to be played at no cost.

The fish cards containing predators are much more interesting then the new prey effects. With a new consume icon which lets any fish consume a shorter fish.

As well as a new strategy to implement with the school of fish. Now with the symbol below, a school of fish which normally cannot be dismantled can now be discarded and replaced with four fish tokens in any different locations on the board. By gaining one more fish tokens this can accelerate gaining more schools of fish at the end of the game. This new strategy is only useful if the player is focused on gaining school of fish earlier in the game. It is also a good way to return the school of fish back into fish resources based on the strategy of the player.

Final Thoughts:

- Coral adds a reason to keep diving into certain tracks besides the normal benefits of those tracks.
- Abundance of new cards.
- There are new mechanisms but this is a very much more content expansion that can easily be played with even new players.
- More strategies to build around the school of fish.

Sharks and Reef is an easy expansion to add to any existing players collection of Finspan. This is the kind of expansion that fits well into the more stuff. There are 75 new cards adding different strategies with consuming cards, and dispersing the normally inseparable school of fish. New mechanisms have been added in the form of the reef, where there is now a way to earn plenty of points by diving in the same tracks and collecting corals by paying the required resources. This expansion adds to this by having coral requirements to play certain cards, cards that award more corals and even cards that have stronger effects when surrounded by enough coral. For any existing fans of Finspan this is an easy more stuff expansions to add creating an abundance of replayability, more decisions space while not increasing the ease of play.
