Exit - Adventures on Catan Scenario:

Exit - Aventures onCatan Scenario:

Introductions:

Exit is an escape game franchise with one of the largest catalogues. Players will solve various puzzles that interact with all elements of the game including cards, flyers, the rulebook, and even the game box.

Each puzzle will have a symbol linked to it and result in three digits that need to be entered on the decoder disk in a certain order. Once all the riddles have been solved, the players have solved the Exit game.

Game Anatomy:

Riddle Cards:

The game will tell players when to interact with these cards. In doing so, the cards will give players the information necessary to solve the puzzles.

Decoder Disk:

The decoder disk contains each puzzle's symbol on the outer rim, followed by three rotating number dials. When the player aligns the numbers underneath the symbol, an answer card will be displayed in the square box close to the centre of the disk.

Answer Cards:

When revealing answer cards, they will either show a red cross, which means the answer provided is wrong, or it may provide a directory card of the ten riddles. Linked to the puzzle the players are working on will be another answer card, which will then either reveal a cross or the next steps after resolving the puzzle.

Help Cards:

Puzzles can often be very challenging after hitting a roadblock or receiving a cross instead of progressing. There is no shame in revealing a help card. Each help card has three levels for each puzzle. First is a vague clue, second is a more obvious clue, and last is the puzzle solution.

How to Play:

Essentially, players start at the starting point of this adventure, with puzzles A-E and the fold-out stating ‘start’. From here, players are trying to resolve the puzzles and fill the decoder with the correct numbers.

As the game progresses, new puzzles cards and fold-outs will be used as detailed in the game components. Once all ten puzzles have been solved, the game will finish. The time and help needed in the game will determine the end score, however, it is a feat to succeed in general.

Catan Elements (Light Spoilers):

The theming and world of the classic game ‘Catan’ have been integrated into this aptly named Exit. As players play through the scenario they will be building a Catan board. Whenever they complete a puzzle, if the sequence of numbers contains a circled number matching one on their board, they will be awarded the corresponding resource.

These resources are crucial to the story of this Exit, as there are nine helpers of Catan displayed in a row. Six of these helpers will need certain resources traded to them to reveal key information and often reward the player with different resources. This is quite easy to spot when to do this except for the case of the first villager.

Difficulty:

The difficulty is determined as 3 out of 5 stars. It could be that I'm not as familiar with exit games as I am with other escape games because I found the Catan Exit to be very difficult. Constantly throughout the experience, I turned to the help cards for the second clue or the solution. In my opinion, this is not the first exit to jump into even if the theme draws you in.

Final Thoughts:

- Challenging and interesting puzzles.
- Fun integration of the Catan theme.
- The exit mechanisms and decoder disk are tried and true, plus it feels great that no app is needed.
- The components are very destructible so this is a one-time-use game.
- Much harder than the box difficulty leads you to believe.

Exit is a very versatile system with 10 challenging puzzles. The best part is that the game can be played anywhere as there is no app required and the box is very portable. The Catan theme really comes alive as players are building a Catan board and trading with villagers throughout the puzzles for further information. On the negative side, this is a very challenging and long exit game, at least for my exit-specific skill level. This is an exit that is designed for the veteran players of the system, as there are a lot of interesting and challenging puzzles, but I would not say this is the best choice for anyone newly introduced to the game.
