Dice Throne - Cursed Pirate: Character Spotlight

Dice Throne - Cursed Pirate: Character Spotlight

Introduction:

The Cursed Pirate is the only character in Dice Throne that I am aware of with zero upgrade cards but instead designed as a double sided character. The Pirate side that will stay on the starting side until they have no doubloons left to lose.

Once flipped into the cursed mode they won't flip again but will slowly lose life until they either win or lose.

Complexity:

The complexity is noted as a four. In my opinion the complexity of Cursed Pirate is closer to a five or a six. Players have to understand the two conflicting play styles of either side of the board. The pirate side is a slower side,

where the cursed side is a ticking time bomb, a glass cannon as some people state.

Status Effects:

Cursed Doubloons:

Cursed Doubloons are dual use. Firstly they are a timer for the pirate side. At the end of each turn a cursed Doubloons will be removed from the pirate, if this is not possible then the player will need to flip to the cursed side for the rest of the game. There are plenty of methods to gain or remove doubloons to slow or speed up this transition.

Once in the cursed state the doubloons will heal the cursed player when gained through cards. Mainly though, the doubloons will now be used as a negative for other players. Opponents can have doubloons inflicted on them dealing one damage to them in each upkeep. While only being able to be removed from the Cursed Pirates board.

Powder Kegs:

The powder Kegs are great. They force the player with the powder keg to roll at the start of each upkeep. A 1, 2 will explode and deal three damage; 3 - 5 will achieve nothing but a 6 will move to another player. The powder keg can only stack one high but when exceeding the stack limit the original powder keg will actually explode automatically and deal three damage before being replaced by the new powder keg.

Whither and Parlay:

Whither can stack two high. This is a native status token that can reduce one damage from the opponent's offensive roll. This is an ongoing persistence.

For one turn parlay can prevent the opponent from dealing damage to the Cursed Pirate from the offensive roll.

Final Thoughts:

- Glass cannon character that rapidly speeds up the game. This is through powerful hits, and constant status effects pressure.
- No upgrades but an interesting double sided board. That allows for two play styles the safe and the risky.
- Complicated character to understand.
- Powder Keg is a great status effect. The deals damage when the stack limit is exceeded.

The Cursed Pirate is very interesting she has a standard starting way to play that is a timer to the more advanced glass cannon side. The Cursed Pirate is a strong hitter but once she runs out of Cursed Doubloons  she will flip to her cursed side, becoming a ticking time bomb. At the end of every turn she will take damage making each turn pivotal. If you enjoy fast characters that can hit hard I can easily recommend Cursed Pirate.
