Introduction:
Nightmare Before Christmas has joined Funkoverse with a four character pack that includes a companion (which there isn't enough of) and new scenarios that allows 3-4 players to face off against each other. The new characters are Oogie Boogie, Sally, Dr Finklestein and Jack Skellington.
Characters:
Oogie Boogie:
Resources: Yellow and Grey.
Defence: 2
Ability Cost: 2-4
Oogie Boogie is all about the lucky rolls with his custom oogie boogie dice as all his abilities have a secondary ability unlocked if he rolls 7+. The really interesting part is that his passive ability allows you to constantly shift resources down the cool-down track, as long as the dice faces are the same when rolling either the oogie boogie dice or the challenge dice. String some luck together and do this over a couple turns and you will have more options available with a better influx of resources.
Sally:
Resources: Blue and Grey.
Defence: 2
Ability Cost: 1-2
Sally is a character that has great movement. She has a detachable arm that helps with escaping situations or to move towards favourable locations. If close enough Sally can either swap places with the arm when attacked, having the arm take the damage, or use blue abilities to move the arm or teleport to the arm's location. Sally will need a teammate to help her move her arm to optimise the swapping of locations.
Dr. Finklestein:
Resources: Yellow and Grey.
Defence: 2
Ability Cost: 2
Dr Finklestein comes with his trusty minion, Igor, who can move around the field, help move other allies (as an end-of-turn effect) and do a non-interact basic action (as an activated ability). This means that you can move him and other allies around the map then have Igor either assist allies or do a basic challenge to the enemies. The most interesting action Dr. Finklestein has is 'It's Alive' which allowed him to turn a token or marker into an attacking force of range 2 and challenge 3. This can be very useful when you have numerous tokens spread across the map including companions and allies.
Jack Skellington:
Resources: Yellow and Blue
Defence: 2
Ability Cost: 1-3
Jack has an interesting status card called 'Pumpkin King' that allows the player to discard it and reduce the resource cost of their next ability by 2. The interesting thing about Jack Skellington is his passive ability which allows allied characters within a range of 2 to activate abilities on Jack's card as if they were their own. Meaning a character with a high ability cost can gain the pumpkin king status card and unleash their abilities at a faster rate.
Items:
Fog Juice:
There are a type of items that add a single resource type to your team. They have been scattered throughout different sets. This one, in particular, is a grey resource. This is great for teams that focus on grey abilities as one more resource can make a difference.
Zero:
Zero is one helpful companion, he will zoom around the map and either pick up point markers, interact with control markers or revive fallen allies.
New Scenarios:
This set has two new scenarios that introduce gameplay for 3-4 players. ‘Triumph’ is about gaining control and standing on the triumph square, and ‘Infiltrate’ is a larger version of flags with players immediately being transported back to base after interacting with the infiltrate marker. In these larger modes, players will also gain points if their character is adjacent to a rival when they are knocked out even if they didn't deliver the final blow.
Final Thoughts:
- Great to see the addition of more players and would be interested to see more modes at this player count.
- Great range of characters.
- A resource-adding item and companion.
- Board is a bit messy with obstacles.
Funkoverse Nightmare Before Christmas 100, like all funkoverse expansions, is an easy addition if you enjoy the property. The four-pack sets like this one are particularly great because they normally offer a good mix of support and lead characters. The other interesting aspect is this is one of the first sets to include a non-team based mode at higher player counts, allowing players to duke it out in a group of 3-4. If you enjoy Nightmare Before Christmas or want to play Funkoverse at 3+ player counts then I recommend gaining this expansion.
