Corps of Discovery Expansion 4 Fog: Review
Introduction:
Corps of Discovery is a great game that was released last year. This works as a cooperative survival game at the forefront but secondary is a deduction puzzle that is crucial for the players to analyse to get the right terrain they are seeking or resolve the scenario. slowly all the expansions are being covered, for the initial review click here. This review focused on the fourth expansion, The Fog.
Goal:
Unlike the other scenarios the resource rules for the terrain are completely jumbled. Due to the fog, none of the normal deduction clues apply. The goal of this scenario is through exploration, firstly players have to find three Tipis, then deduce which terrain applies to which empty space in the reference board. When the board is set up there is a mission briefing cutout used to hide the rules for the terrains, the benefit of this is the rule for the water will be revealed, creating less terrain rules to identify.
After the three Tipis have been visited and there are no monsters in play. if the players are in agreement on all of the terrain rules, they can declare the end of the game, if they are 100% correct they win, else they will lose.
Components:
As far as components go the fog doesn't add too many new cards, it adds scenarios specific to new challenges, threat cards, and destiny cards. More gear that can be used in any scenario is added onto the ensemble as well.
What it does add is double the map quantity at 20 maps and eight reference boards.
Monsters:
Monsters will prey on the fact players are lost. Instead of a direct attack like an enemy token on the board blocking certain movements. Monsters in this scenario are instead causing a loss of water whenever a certain terrain is revealed, which is a real thorn as it can happen a lot due to the lack of direction, they may require a resource that players don't even know where it is yet. These monsters can be eliminated by paying the resource cost at the bottom of the card.
Advanced Rules:
Not only does this expansion create a new scenario for players. It also creates a mini expansion for the previous scenarios. Each scenario type has fog maps and reference board introduced. This doesn't change the end-game condition of the maps it instead adds an added layer of challenge that players have to navigate through.
Final Thoughts:
- New scenario that is more focused on deduction.
- More great content for the Corps of Discovery.
- May feel more random for some people.
As the expansions grow, the game of Corps of Discovery keeps becoming more and more variable. This scenario focuses on turning the deduction on its head, the initial goal is simply to find three Tipi and have no monsters in play. The challenge comes in exploring enough to have the terrain rules visible. Completing the missions and monsters is much hard though, creating a new challenge of survival. In the other scenarios it has been vital to gain the resources needed through the terrain rules, without that it can be much more challenging to complete the challenges and monsters. This may feel too random for some people as there are more turns used towards building the map then other scenarios, for me I do enjoy the twist on how the deduction becomes more prominent and the survival becomes more of a timer than the other scenarios.
