Basics:
Toongeon Dice has players creating an evil dungeon filled with monsters and traps all in the style of a 1950's cartoon. In this game you are trying to create doubles, triplets, four of a kind or a run of four yahtzee style by rolling and re-rolling six dice.
These patterns will give you crystals in the form of different coloured smiley faces. You can complete multiple patterns on a turn and even cash in a die with the number 3 to gain a mysterious treasure that may allow you to manipulate, steal or roll the dice.
On your turn you will spend these crystals to gain various monsters or traps that award players different levels of points for the end of the game scoring. Whichever player has the most points at the end of the game wins.
Uniqueness:
This game has been coined as a roll and create game as, instead of writing and chaining combos, the game is more of a resource management style. You are creating treasures that can manipulate your luck and crystals that you can spend to gain more challenging crystals (two crystals can be traded for the next colour up) or on the monsters and traps you will fill your dungeon with. Players have to decide if they are going after monsters that are cheaper/easier but give less points or if they plan to save up their crystals to gain those big unique monsters/traps that score a large amount of points. These larger ones aren't always worth the pay off of several turns though, especially if the luck of the dice are not on your side.
Zig-Zag (player interaction):
There is some interaction from a certain treasure that can steal crystals off other players but the main form of interaction comes as a race between opponents. One third of the monsters/traps are unique and therefore have only one available for creation. This means players have to race to create the correct crystals first in order to create the favoured monsters/traps.
Zone:
Toongeon Dice enters the watch zone as a great game for players that enjoy yahtzee. Instead of players purely going for patterns to fill in a sheet, they instead chose which monsters/traps they are aiming for then work to gain those prerequisite crystals by rolling the right dice patterns. The game can be very dependent on luck as most of the patterns are different iterations of rolling the same number, players should aim to mitigate this luck feature by using the treasure tokens. If you are looking for a game in the same vein of yahtzee that can be played with anyone and you always enjoy seeking a good print and play, go back Toongeon Dice now on Kickstarter.
