Introduction:
Renegade Games have embraced the comics when it comes to sources of content for their Power Ranger games and I can't get enough. Omega Forever focuses on great stories that come from the run of Omega Rangers, a line of comics that followed the original characters who left the team when the second generation of rangers entered the comics.
Content:
- Four new cards of each type that appear twice.
- Four unique locations.
- Four villains with their masters and signature items.
- Four Power Rangers with their signature items and zords (including the fusion zord cards).
- New blaster stack - Omega Strike
- Two Anointed and Omega Morpher cards
New Mechanisms/Terms:
New Blaster - Omega Strike:
The Omega Strike gives players a way to heal due to consistent small damage or the player can double down with the speed of the game and deal 2 damage but take 1 themselves.
New starting cards:
The villains and rangers both gain a new starting card that gives two shards (a good source of shards straight away) and one energy. These cards also speed up the game slightly as they will take away one health every time they are played.
Omega Morpher and Omega Coin:
The new Omega Power Rangers have a bonus ability that is used through their omega coin. On the teenager side, you can discard the coin to turn to the ranger side until the end of the turn. On the ranger side, each Omega Power Ranger has a unique ability that utilises this coin. The only way the rangers can gain the coin is through the use of the new starter card; Omega Morpher.
Fusion Zords:
Each of the zords in this set has a secondary ability that can be activated to turn the zord into a fusion zord.
This allows the new fusion zord to attach to another pre-purchased zord and improve the ability, such as not exhausting when used or having the zords ability as unblockable.
Unique Villains:
Cavotus:
This unique villain flips based on whether he has dealt or received five damage. On his scheming side, he is in a weakened state and will receive a negative one (-1) on any attack he does.
The flip side of this is when empowered he has a plus one (+1) modification to each of his attacks. You have to be careful as Cavotus, since no matter what side he is on he will constantly lose one health every turn. This is counterbalanced by constantly charging and gaining two energy every turn. As the villain you are accelerated to act fast.
Dayne:
Dayne is a versatile fighter with his trusty plasma baton that can transform into four different forms. Each of these forms have unique abilities and attacks that hinder opponents or help himself.
This plasma baton is shuffled into his deck at the start of the game providing use from the start. You will want to aim to transform Dayne fast as the baton only transforms when Dayne is empowered and activating his ability. Dayne can do this action multiple times a turn, creating a flurry of abilities. Make sure you have your energy stored as his abilities cost 4, 5, 6 and 9.
Final Thoughts:
- Unique range of villains.
- A new way to play as the rangers flipping back and forth between sides and activating the attacks earlier.
- The game feels faster as there are more cards dealing small but consistent damage.
- longer abilities on cards or multiple attacks.
- More expensive abilities on the signature cards.
The main part of this expansion is the characters and the accelerated process of the game. The cards in this expansion allow you to do larger attacks with more benefits or costs, as well as many ways to make small increments of damage. The omega rangers have the new twist on upgrading other zords with their fusion zords and the omega coin that allows them to transition back and forth as well as a unique opportunity on the ranger side. The interesting characters don't just come from the ranger side, the villain side contains two unique villains, Cavotus who swaps back and forth and Dayne who has multiple signature items he can transition through. The other two villains are also very engaging to play as Garrison Vox who is focused on constant aggression and Annointed Kira who is accelerated through cheaper cards from the grid, larger card drawing opportunity and a powerful four-attack signature item. The base game never felt too long to me, but with these new characters, we were playing the game in rapid succession. All of the characters are fun to play as and cater to different play styles. Both villain and hero players have a lot more to manage with these characters but the game time didn't suffer for this. If you enjoy the omega storyline in the comics or simply want these engaging characters to play as, I recommend adding this expansion to your collection.
