Introduction:
Mindbug is back with two new expansions (Evolution and Eternity). This review focuses on Mindbug Beyond Evolution which expands the card roster by another 44 creature cards and brings in a new option on your turn; actions.
Setup:
There are double-sided evolution cards that will be set aside at the start of the game instead of being shuffled into the deck. Certain cards will have the opportunity to evolve into these cards during the game.
Unique Mindbugs:
Purely as a cosmetic addition, four new mindbugs have been added with two lots of unique artwork. These mindbugs do not structurally change the game but it does mean players can buy just this expansion and play the game from this set alone.
New Features:
There are several new triggers featured in this expansion. Besides this, the gameplay stays the same as the base game with the same triggers from the base game still existing: attack, defeated, and play.
All of the important keywords from the base game such as frenzy, sneaky, hunter, poisonous and tough still exist as well.
Action:
Instead of attacking or playing a card you can activate an action from one of your creatures. These include making an enemy attack, opposition loses a life, defeating an enemy, or taking control of an enemy creature.
Evolve:
Evolve is an evolution of the action mechanic. There are four evolvable creatures with unique double-sided cards for the second and third stages of evolution.
The first and second stages will have an action that can be resolved followed by evolving the creature. By the third evolution, the changed creature will be stronger and have a better action.
Final Thoughts:
- Nearly doubles the number of cards in the base game.
- If players don't like the mindbug mechanism then this won't change their minds.
- Art is still as great and whimsical as the base game.
- Could be played without the base game.
If you didn't enjoy the base game due to the mindbug element or the rapid speed of the game then this expansion doesn't do anything drastic to change your mind. However, for players such as me who enjoyed the base game for its unique twist on typical head-to-head games, quick gameplay, and sharp art then this expansion is perfect for you as it nearly doubles the card count as well as adding another layer to the game.
