Introduction:

'A pocket full of rye, four and twenty blackbirds baked into a pie'. In Sixpence Bakery, players are trying to fill three pies full of blackbirds. This is done by having an unbaked pie equal to exactly 24 blackbirds. Once a player has done this three times they have successfully won.

Card Anatomy:

Pies:

In the middle of the table there will be three unbaked pies that each player will collectively work towards and each player will also have one pie in front of them. The three in the middle can be baked multiple times, however, the pie in front of each player can only be baked once per game.

Blackbirds:

The blackbirds will appear in only odd numbers 1,3, 5, 7 and 9.

Royal Cards:

There are three types of royal cards in the deck. The royal cards allows you to play two blackbird cards on a turn, move a card from one pie to another pie or discard one blackbird card in play. One royal can be played on your turn as long as you did not draw the royal that turn.

Setup:

- Shuffle the main deck of cards and deal three cards to each player.

- Deal three blackbirds cards face up in the centre of the table, if they are royal cards then place them back in the deck and redraw.

- Place three unbaked pies in the centre of the table and give one to each player.

How to Play:

Taking a turn is pretty easy. On your turn either play a blackbird from your hand or the centre play area into the three pies in the middle or your own personal pie. After this, if you played a card from the middle you must replenish that card from the main deck, if the card is a royal then the royal will go into your hand and you will draw a new card until it is a blackbird.

Final Thoughts:

Key Points

- Easy to learn and play.

- The odd numbered cards make it challenging to play the blackbirds at the right time.

Sixpence Bakery is reminiscent of the game Blackjack as players are aiming to get as close to 24 blackbirds without giving the point to their opponent. This is an easy game to play with anyone as it is easy to learn but can be strategic when players should play cards and on what pie. This will be a game I'll enjoy as a filler or a family game for quite some time.
