Rundown:
In Voyages you are sailing your ship across the ocean to gain three stars. Throughout this pursuit you will be selling cargo, sailing across unknown oceans, sinking marauder ships, searching for legendary items and gaining and upgrading sailors.
Every turn involves rolling three dice. One is the amount of spaces you can move, one is the direction of movement and the last one goes towards your duties.
The duties will alter on every map and give you one time benefits or more long term rewards.
Once a player has three stars, gained in different ways every map, there will be one final turn and whichever player has the most points is the winner.
Alteration:
Postmark Games have made a commitment to constantly grow the alteration for their game by using free maps released frequently post release on email/discord. For this reason they will always have my attention when they make a new game. There have been five maps in total released for voyages, each with different mechanisms that help make the maps feel unique. There is also a thriving community that makes custom maps each with their own rule-set.
Production:
Voyages follows the latest trend of print and play only games on Kickstarter. Roll and writes are the perfect game mechanism for print and plays. For a small cost you have this fun-filled game instantly after backing and don’t have to wait the iconic Kickstarter wait times. As a print and play, the production of the game is what you make of it but that is not the important part of these games, the content and quality of the game is what stands out.
Interaction:
The interaction that players have in this game is purely from a high score perspective. Each time you play you are interacting with your past experiences to try and maximise your turns to score a higher total then your last experience. Each map has their own unique tricks that need to be mastered to optimise the scoring potential.
Determination:
Key points:
- Ongoing support from the creators
- Turns can be challenging to figure out which dice to use although this is mitigated with the sailors that can alter dice.
- Simple rules, with tough decisions.
- Many variations in the maps.
Voyages is a shining example of a good print and play game. It is easy to assemble, easy to learn but vastly re-playable with multiple maps and the fate of the dice creating challenging experiences for players. If you enjoy roll and writes then you really should open up to what Postmark Games are doing. For the price of a coffee you can get this great roll and write experience that will grow with more content and variability. This is a great roll and write with an abundance of challenge and replay-ability and is an easy addition to your collection. Due to my fantastic experiences with this game and the various maps, I am now more open to print and play roll and write games.
