Introduction:
The First Class expansion for Marvel United has a lot of content, new locations, five new characters, a new villain and a new danger room module that can be added to any game.
Three New Locations:
These locations have ways for players to heal and gain tokens. As well as a unique location of Cape Citadel that allows players to hurt thugs or henchman if a civilian is within that location.
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver Villain:
First class adds a combined villain where you are facing Magneto’s twin offspring. Most of their deck has them moving around the map (quicksilver always moves more) and each of them dealing damage. There are three big challenges with these villains. First off, you cannot eliminate the villains one by one as they will keep activating if only one is defeated. They will only stop when both have been defeated. Secondly, four of their threats take four heroic actions instead of the normal three, making them more challenging to remove. Lastly, they are hard to defeat as the ‘sibling bond’ threat has the villains returning to one health rather than defeat until both instances of this threat are removed. Like this, Scarlet Witch can essentially reset the scenario twice with reality warping. This returns face down master plans to the deck, returns the villains to their starting position at full health and returns the players to full health as well.
Danger Room:
The danger room is a new challenge added to the game. Unlike the rest it is meant to make the game easier. During setup a danger room will be placed beneath the starting location and then covered by a threat card. Once that threat has been removed, players can activate the danger room instead of the location. The player will gain a training card from the danger room which will either be one time effects or permanent cards. The discard effects help to add icons to the card you played in the story line or help by drawing more cards. The permanent cards have stronger effects such as moving other heroes or villains, dealing extra damage or adding tokens to threats.
New Characters:
Five new characters are added to the game. First class versions of Ice Man, Cyclops, Beast, Angel and Marvel Girl (Jean Grey).
First Class Iceman:
Ice man has 7 movement, 6 attack and 2 heroic actions. He also comes with ice tokens that are unique to his character that will either freeze a villain and render them unable to move next turn, or will open an ice slide that players can use to freely move pass a location without using a movement action. These effects will last until ice man has his next turn.
First Class Angel:
Angel comes with 8 movement, 2 attack and 3 heroic actions. He has two special abilities that will each appear twice. He is able to distribute two heroic actions to any player and he can move to any location to defeat two thugs there.
Marvel Girl:
Marvel Girl has a decent range of icons with 4 movement, 4 attack and 5 heroic actions. Her special move is telekinesis which allows her to perform an attack or heroic action in her location or one adjacent. An added feature is that one of her telekinesis abilities have a wild action in the shared section.
First Class Beast:
Beast is heavily focused on heroic actions as he comes with 7, he is also high in movement with 5 move icons but only comes with 3 attacks. This is alleviated by his star athlete card (of which he has two), one with a move and attack, and the other with a move and heroic action. He also has two cards that will give him a token of either attack, move or heroic action.
First Class Cyclops:
Cyclops comes in low on attacks (he only has 3) but he makes up for this with his special cards. Dealing damage in an adjacent location and dealing one damage to everything in his location. He has average to high heroic actions and movement at 5 and 6, respectively.
Final Thoughts:
Key Points;
- Great range of new characters
- Challenging new villain
- Danger room challenge added to use against villains
Marvel United - First Class is a great expansion that adds tons of variability with new locations and five new heroes. It also adds a challenging villain with two enemies and a new module that helps the players to face the harder villains. This is an expansion I would heavily recommend because it easily adds to every part of the game while still bringing in new challenges and a new module (danger room that can be used in any game.
