Introduction:
Marvel United X-Men: Days of Future Past is an expansion that adds one villain (Nimrod), A hero (Logan), and sentinels that can be used in any scenario.
Nimrod:
Nimrod is a special villain as he doesn't use any missions, instead, he uses sentinels to protect him. The sentinels can be damaged at the start of the game. The sentinels are unique in that they have one target (except for the four-player version) and will hunt that player endlessly. After a player has their turn, the corresponding sentinel has a procedure that they will follow. This is based on the actions on the last two cards in the timeline. If there is a movement they will move towards that character; if there is a heroic action they will add a civilian; if there is an attack symbol they will attack a hero in their location; and finally, if there is a wild they will heal. These abilities will activate for each action symbol in the last two cards. The last two components of the sentinel's turn includes increasing the nimrod activation track (more on this soon) if there is a special ability on the last card played. The other feature is when they enter the location of their targeted player they will damage the player for one health.
Once players have successfully eliminated the sentinels, nimrod will now be placed on the map. Nimrod enters under pressure so he will play a master plan straight away and will continue to play a master plan after every two turns. The benefit is that Nimrod can be damaged straight away. There is an activation track that will instantly win him the game once the track reaches 15. This track will also make Nimrod's attack (BAM) more powerful as it progresses. Once this track has reached the red area (10 - 14) Nimrod can KO most characters in one hit which will eliminate a player (in this scenario) rather than allowing for a respawn.
Sentinels:
Not only are sentinels a challenging force to be reckoned with but they can also be added into any game and against any villain, not just with Nimrod. There are three sentinels to choose from. Each sentinel has the same actions for the move, attack and heroic actions, whereas, the wild action will activate a different effect on different sentinels. The other difference is that the sentinels can only be attacked when the villain is under pressure and the sentinel will activate every turn but will only use the actions of the most recent card played, not the last two. Additionally, special abilities will not affect the sentinels.
Logan Character:
The Logan character also comes in this expansion. He has 4 movements, 7 attacks, and 3 heroic actions throughout his deck. He has a starting card that allows you to ignore one damage each villain turn as long as it is face up. His special card (of which there are three) allows you to attack than draw one card. This is a wolverine that is focused on the healing factor.
Final Thoughts:
Pros:
- Amazing sentinel 'miniatures'.
- Interesting new module that can be used in any game.
Cons:
- Less content than other expansions.
The Days of Future Past expansion is worth it just for the sentinels alone. These bad boys are large with a lot of added detail. They add a unique layer where players really have to consider how their actions will come back on them when it’s time for the sentinel to activate. This is a module that I will add when I am looking for an extra challenge or if I feel like the villain needs a boost.
