Rundown:
Gamelyn Games create large scale games with a tiny footprint. These games come in small cases but within that they hold a large experience with plenty of replayability. Tiny Epic Zombies has players constantly on the move trying to complete three objectives before running out of survivors or turns. All but one of the players will have this objective. In the base rules, one of the players is a zombie and are actively trying to stop the other players by anticipating their moves and thwarting them successfully.
Alteration:
Overall, there are nine possible objectives where only three are used in each game. There are also 18 characters for players to choose from, each with a different ability. All of these characters also have a zombie side. This means that the zombie player will also have a unique character in each game. They will have their own passive ability, as well as a horde ability that is activated when you have the human player flip a card with the same noise as the room they are in.
There are five game modes to play; solo, cooperative, cooperative vs one, competitive and competitive vs one. This is a very complete package with plenty of replayability in such a tiny box.
Production:
The production is great in this game with screen printed meeples and the famous item meeples from Gamelyn Games. These items meeples are ones that can hold items so you know which characters are equipped with what. Everything fitting easily into this small box allows the game to be easily transportable and played in any environment.
Interaction:
The main interaction comes in game modes that have a zombie player. This is because the zombie player is giving players cards and trying to have those players then end their turn in a room that matches the card they will reveal. The zombie player then can do a horde ability to further their chance of winning.
Determination:
Pros:
- Great use of components to make a big game fit in a small package.
- Wide range of characters to try with each having a zombie side.
- The zombie gets stronger the more characters you lose as their passive ability gets added to the zombies' abilities.
- The one vs many modes are much better as it feels more strategic.
Cons:
- The game feels lacking in the modes that do not have a player controlling the zombies.
- Because the game has a limited amount of turns, it is challenging to learn how to optimise play in this time.
Tiny Epic Zombies is a great game in a small package. Most zombie games feel like a survival game where in this one the zombies are more of a nuisance than a danger. This leads to the game feeling like trying to complete a puzzle in a certain amount of time. If the deck runs out, the game finishes and the human players lose. I would only play the modes that have a zombie player though as it creates a challenging puzzle instead of a game that is mainly led by luck. This is a great game that will be added to my collection, and I will keep the Tiny Epic Games collection on my radar.
