The Pantheon expansions for the game ‘Epic’ has added 12 new cards per pack that can be used in any game, as well as a token and two demigods/gods/eldergods in each pack. The gods add an asymmetrical character for each player to use in the game. Each god has a different power level and is used against the same type of God or a higher level God can verse two players of the God level before it.
New ways to play:
‘Diety Random’ and ‘Diety Draft’ are two new ways to play. For Diety Random, choose a diety level then randomly deal each player a diety from that level. Then randomly deal 30 cards that match that gods alignment shown on the top border of the card, it will either be one or two alignments. Drafting will be the same as normal but afterwards a god of the same level will be drafted by each player.
Demigods: Demigods are the way to introduce dieties to epic. There are no rule changes for them and the players still play with 30 health and one gold. Each demigod has an ability where you can banish cards from your discard pile to gain an effect once per turn. These abilities will either allow you to draw a card, damage/buff champions, or summon a token.
Gods: With the gods there are three differences; each player will gain an extra gold each turn, the game starts on 45 health, and players can draw an extra card each turn by banishing one card from their hand to do so. The gods are unique from other deities as they only have one alignment. Each god has an ability that can be paid for by spending one gold, as well as an ally ability that will activate when the player uses a gold card of that alignment. These gods are drastically more powerful than the demigods.Elder Gods: The elder gods start the game with a whopping 90 health and a 6 card hand. Each turn they draw two cards and have two gold to spend. When their turn is over they also gain one gold for the opposing players turn. Each elder God has an ability that occurs at the start of their turn. Each of the elder gods have two abilities to choose from that are drastically strong like 'Furios' who can gain 10 health or deal 6 damage to a target.
Final Thoughts:
Pros:
- Interesting alignment system for random games.
- Each God has a deck list that can be built and used as a constructed deck.
- Each level of deity feels balanced to the same deities.
- One vs two game mode.
Cons:
- Does not fit into the base game box.
In my base game review I compared 'Epic' a lot to games such as Magic: The Gathering. The pantheons remind me of the Magic: The Gathering game mode ‘Commander’, which was my all time favourite way to play, the gods remind me of how the commander worked, it gave you a character with strong abilities in that helped focus the playstyle of your deck. The Pantheons expansions breathe depth and complexity into the base game by giving players multiple game modes to choose from. Each level of deity induces variations to the base game rules to keep the game balanced and continuously growing the epic nature of the game. If you enjoy epic then this is an expansion I definitely recommend.
