Rundown:
'Eminent Domain' has players exploring the galaxy surveying planets to colonise or invade. After gaining these planets, players will be able to increase their hand size, gain points, produce and sell resources, and gain symbols to amplify their turns.
Alteration:
The game offers variability in what strategies players can pursue. This is mainly based on the role each player performs each turn or which advanced cards are gained through research tasks. Every turn the active player will choose a role out of the five available: warfare, colonise, survey, research or produce/trade. This is mostly how players will gain new cards to their deck as they will add that card to the discard pile then use as many cards as they want with the same symbol in their hand to amplify the effect of the role. Through these roles, players will gain points in many different ways such as colonising or invading planets; adding advanced cards to their deck through research; or simply by producing and selling resources. Once players have become accustomed to these strategies there are three expansions that changes up game play drastically.
Production:
The game comes with a sturdy board, multiple plastic ships of different sizes, and resource tokens of multiple colours. The components for the resources and ships seem odd at first as most players will tend to check if the different ship sizes matter. At this point, they are not important but it has been created in this way to future proof the components for the expansions as the different ship types and resources exist for a reason.
Interaction:
Players can follow their opponent’s chosen role by playing multiple cards of their own with the identical icon to perform a slightly weaker but similar action. In this way, players are always involved in the game and constantly reconsidering tactics based on the interactions with opponents. If players choose not to follow the role they may draw a card from their deck instead. This leaves players trying to keep sets of cards in their hand to anticipate opponent turns. This follow interaction is further amplified as a player does not have to empty their hand on their turn.
Determination:
This is a great deck builder that has quick turns and constant engagement from players. It is unique from other deck builders as it is not a combo-based deck builder but more of a set collection. There are three expansions I am looking forward to exploring but for now 'Eminent Domain' has earned a go-to golden game seal and earning it’s stay in my collection.
