Card Anatomy:
There are two types of cards: Challenge cards and Trivia cards. As the names suggest, challenge cards will require the player(s) to complete a challenge in order to win the card, and trivia cards will require the player(s) to correctly answer a question.Challenge Cards:
There are two types of challenge cards; activity challenges and social challenges. Both of these can be group or solo challenges which may be physical, artistic or spoken. So you’ll want your creativity to be flowing before starting, you must be the best in order to win after all.
Trivia Cards:
Just like the challenge cards, these trivia cards can be done solo or as a group. As the name suggests, these cards contain a trivia based question to be answered by one player or the group.
How to Play:
begin by shuffling all of the cards together and place the deck in the middle with the character images facing up. then one player begins as the referee. This player will draw the top card of the deck and read out the description on the front of the card. If prompted by the card, they can divide the players into groups. The referee then chooses a player who they believe will either win this activity/correctly answer the question. If the referee was able to correctly guess the winner, they gain two points. So choose your champion wisely as this is the best way to get ahead with points.
All players will have 30 seconds to complete the challenge or write down the answer. Every player with the right answer will gain one point, and if the question is for a group, then every member of the group will gain one point. If this is a challenge, however, and there is no correct answer, then there will be a vote (remember to vote in the spirit of the game, not just for your favourite people). These challenges can be artistic in nature such as a song for your pet, or physical in nature such as a wheelbarrow race, so you will never know quite what to expect.
The role of the referee will then pass to the player on the right and this will continue until one player achieves 15 points and are titled the unrivaled champion.
Final Thoughts:
Pros:- great conversation starter
- brings out the creativity of players
- a wide range of trivia
Cons:
- needs an odd amount of players to do some of the activity challenges unless players are sitting out.
- if you don't like doing physical, artistic or spoken actions during a game, then this won't be for you
Unrivaled is a fun, and active party game for a casual setting. However, for the game to truly shine you're going to need an uneven amount of players and the willingness of all players to get up and be in the spirit of the game. If players aren't willing to do what the challenges ask of you, then this game has a huge potential to fall flat. If you have a free-spirited silly group of players ready for some fun, then Unrivaled will definitely be one to play.
